Back in 1984, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley had a goal of capturing the number one song on Christmas Day in the United Kingdom (U.K.) with a song called Last Christmas. Ironically they were denied by another project they participated in – Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? Now 39 years later, Wham! has finally captured the Christmas number one song in the U.K.
According to various sources, the song was streamed over it was streamed 13.3m times this week. That streaming, along witalong by special vinyl and CD editions helped push it over the top.
When it was released in 1984, Last Christmas held the number two spot for two weeks, unable to surpass, Do They Know It’s Christmas?
On January 1, 2021, Last Christmas finally reached number one, but it happened on New Year’s Day, not Christmas Day. In the U.K., having the number one single on Christmas Day is considered to be the most prestigious honor.
In recent years, novelty songs have been dominating the Christmas number one. The past five years have seen YouTube musician LadBaby capture the Christmas number one with parody songs.
