BOTB 1970s: Van Halen Eliminates Rush; Marvin edges AC/DC

Van Halen has no problem with Rush. Meanwhile Marvin Gaye holds off a challenge from AC/DC.

The 3-6 matchups have wrapped up in the 2024 Battle of the Bands: The 1970s tournament. On John’s bracket 6th seeded Van Halen Van Halen had no trouble eliminating 3rd seeded Rush’s 2112. On Dave’s bracket, 3rd seeded Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On won a tight battle with 6th seed AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

Van Halen’s Van Halen had an early lead and never looked back capturing 61.1% of the vote to Rush’s 2112‘s 38.9% This is the second year in a row Van Halen has earned a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. In 2023, both Van Halen’s 1984 and 5110 albums advanced to the Round of 16.

Meanwhile Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On was locked in a tight matchup with AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap, but AC/DC just couldn’t get over the hump. Marvin would win with 53.3% of the vote.

On John’s bracket, 6th seeded Van Halen Van Halen will face winner of the 2-7 matchup between Queen’s A Night at the Opera and David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in the Sweet Sixteen. On Dave’s bracket, 6th seeded Dolly Parton’s Jolene faces the winner of The Rolling Stones’ Exile of Main Street and Carole King’s Tapestry.
