The New Oldies: #9 Album of the Year: Lenny Kravitz – Blue Electric Light

Lenny Kravitz's Blue Electric Light lands at Number 9 on the 2024 New Oldies Countdown.

Something seems to be missing these days. It seems that record companies, radio stations, and streaming services are pushing some the great established musicians to the background. As a result these veteran artists are not getting the attention they deserve. Enter the Top 10 Album Countdown: The New Oldies. The main point is simple – to make this list you must have at least 20 years of producing established music. The album by the artist must have been released between November 1st, 2023 and October 31st, 2024

#9 Lenny Kravitz, Blue Electric Light

Once upon a time I heard a commercial for a local radio station in New York proclaim Lenny Kravtiz “the world’s greatest rock and roll star”. I was taken aback by the comment at first, but over the years when I look at Kravitz’s career, e really did have a nice first half of the career. As for his career’s second half, I think Kravtiz has been riding the coattails of what he did during that first half. Blue Electric Light changes that.

Fast-forward to Blue Electric Light. This 2024 release was Kravitz’s 12th album. It’s something as close to a true solo album as possible. When I reviewed the notes on this album, there were something like 30 instruments that Kravitz played. There are still session musicians that are on this, but it still an amazing feat

Blue Electric Light does a create job at delivering elements of R&B, Funk, Rock, Psychedelic and the Minneapolis sound. The opening track It’s Just Another Fine Day does a great job at showing these elements in one track. Other standout tracks include TK421, Honey, and Human. I should point out Kravtiz delivers some excellent Minneapolis sound with Let It Ride. It would have been cool to see him to a duet with Prince on this. Finally the title track is the album’s finale, and I felt it was positioned perfectly as the last track. You will get some of those epic Kravitz guitar riffs and Prince-like vocals.

Blue Electric Light will grab you and hook you. It was good to see Kravitz do some new music and it didn’t disappoint.
