Something seems to be missing these days. It seems that record companies, radio stations, and streaming services are pushing some the great established musicians to the background. As a result these veteran artists are not getting the attention they deserve. Enter the Top 10 Album Countdown: The New Oldies. The main point is simple – to make this list you must have at least 20 years of producing established music. The album by the artist must have been released between November 1st, 2023 and October 31st, 2024
#1 Peter Gabriel – I/O
I/O the tenth studio album by Peter Gabriel is the New Oldies Album of the Year for 2024.
I/O is simply a masterclass in musicianship. I/O has been a project that has been in the works for 27 years – going back to April 1995. This was around the same time Gabriel began recording his previous studio album Up. It was intended as the Follow-up to Up, but numerous delays.
The album has twelve tracks and two different mixes for each of the tracks “Bright-Side Mix” and “Dark-Side Mix”. The Blu-Ray version has a third mix known as “In-Side Mix”. The differences in the mixes on the album are quite subtle, and in some cases difficult to tell the difference.
I/O is a first on Jukebox. It topped Dave’s Top 50 songs for 2024 with the title track. Now the album captures number one on Coop’s New Oldies list. Dave and I give a complete breakdown of this whole album from our Album Archaeology Show on I/O. Gabriel also released one single each time there was a new full moon (in true Peter Gabriel fashion).
You can also listen to an audio replay of that Album Archaelogy here.
This is truly one of the epic albums of all time. It was a runaway winner for the top spot on the New Oldies mix.
