The New Radicals, who may have one of the all-time greatest one hit wonder songs in You Only Get What You Give are reuniting for one night only. The band will be performing at Joe Biden’s Presidential Inauguration on January 18th. It’s the first time in 22 years the New Radicals have gotten back together.
The reunion is said to be a one time performance for the inauguration.
The band was a project formed by singer/songwriter/producer Gregg Alexander and singer/actress Danielle Brisebois. Brisebois is best know for her role as Archie Bunker’s niece Stephanie on All in the Family and Archie Bunker’s Place. The New Radicals released one album – 1998’s Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too. Alexander dissolved the band in 1999 to focus on other projects.
In a statement released by Alexander: “If there’s one thing on Earth that would possibly make us get the band together, if only for a day, it is the hope that our song could be even the tiniest beacon of light in such a dark time. America knows in its heart that things will get bright again with a new administration and a real plan for vaccines on the way. That’s the message of the song… this world is gonna pull through.”
There are connections to the Biden campaign. The song You Only Get What You Give was said to be a a theme song for Beau when he was battling cancer. The song was also a part of the 2020 campaign as the walk-on song for Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff.
Alexander and Brisebois were invited by the Biden team to perform in a virtual setting at the January 20th inauguration. They will perform in Philadelphia, a city that is said to be Alexander’s adopted hometown and a city nearby Biden’s home state of Delaware.
Long before Cigar Jukebox, this author named You Only Get What You Give as the #2 Record of the Decade for the 1990s (behind Santana’s Smooth) and #1 Record of the Year for 1998.
