The 2022 class was officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Twelve members were inducted ranging from performers, influencers, producers, and musical business contributors. Names such as Bruce Springsteen, Janet Jackson, Dr. Dre, The Edge, Pink, Alice Cooper, and Robert Downey Jr. were on hand to induct their musical peers. The induction ceremony took place at the Microsoft Theater on November 5, 2022 in Los Angeles. In addition to the ceremony, there were 27 performances featuring some of those inducted, some of the inductors, and other musical stars.
HBO is scheduled to air an edited version of the ceremony on November 19, 2022.
Dolly Parton was the star of the evening. Parton’s induction had a bit of controversy when earlier this year, she had asked the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to withdraw the nomination she received because she when it came to being a Rock artist, she would be taking an induction slot for someone who was a true Rock artist. In the end, it was too late to remove Parton from the ballot and the voters put her in. Parton was warmly embraced by the induction class – many who joined her on stage for a all-star jam of her classic Jolene. Inducres Simon LeBon of Duran Duran, Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics, Pat Benatar, and Rob Halford of Judas Priest joined the jam. She also has since said she would record a Rock album and one song, Rockin (performed with the Zac Brown Band) was performed.
Perhaps one of the more emotional moments of the night took place when Duran Duran announced why Andy Taylor was not in attendance for the induction ceremony. The band revealed he had recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Taylor also wrote a letter to his fans explaining his absence and condition.
Homage was made to late Jerry Lee Lewis as John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen performed Lewis’ hits High School Confidential and Great Balls of Fire. Lewis was part of the inaugural induction class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1986.
