The first two tickets to the Battle of the Bands: 80s Madness Final Four have been punched. Top seeded Prince’s Purple Rain survived a late rally by the 3rd seeded Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill to win Hector’s bracket. Meanwhile 8th seeded Metallica Master of Puppets continued a wild ride this year’s tournament crushing 3rd seeded ZZ Top’s Eliminator to win John’s bracket.
On Hector’s bracket, Prince’s Purple Rain built an early lead and appeared to be cruising to victory. The Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill made a late surge with day two voting. It ended up being the tournament’s closest matchup with Prince winning 51.6% to 48.4% and capturing Hector’s bracket. It’s the first time Prince has gone to a Final Four in a Battle of the Bands tournament.
On John’s bracket, Metallica’s Master of Puppets moved ahead early and never looked back – easily winning 72.0% to 28.0% over ZZ Top’s Eliminator and giving them the crown in John’s bracket. After a stunning win in the first round over Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Metallica has been on a roll. This is the second straight year Metallica has made the Final Four. In 2022’s 90s Madness, Metallica’s Black Album won Coop’s bracket and went to the Final Four.
Metallica’s Master of Puppets plays the winner of Coop’s matchup between AC/DC’s Back in Black and Peter Gabriel’s So. Meanwhile Prince’s Purple Rain plays the winner of Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction and N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton.
