Bad Bunny is a global superstar that still seems to fly under the radar. His latest track Where She Goes has over 300 million downloads on Spotify, but it hasn’t generated the buzz either Taylor Swift or Beyonce have created with their latest tours. This may be due to Bad Bunny singing primarily in Spanish, but the Puerto Rican born artist is blowing up the internet, so let’s take a look at his latest single.
Musically, this track follows a similar structure to some tracks off of Justin Bieber’s Purpose record and Drake’s recent records, which really lean into what I call “feels hip hop.” There is a brooding and dark synth background, which is accented by some driving bass and an occasional gun clip noise and some ethereal synth notes. The background would feel very familiar to Purpose, but Bunny adds some salsa – esque percussion to liven it up a bit. There is a definite “getting sweaty on the dance floor of the club” vibe that I really enjoy. Electro squeals and synth drones are mesmerising and put you in a trance. Where She Goes does not have the same high octane percussion and beat behind tracks like Titi Me Pregunto off his previous record, but it still is enough to get you moving.
Now, I don’t speak Spanish and I do not trust Google translator when it comes to lyrics, so I will come at the lyrics and vocals as more of a vibe. Readers out there who are Spanish speakers, please let us know your thoughts on the lyrics in the comments. Whenever I am listening to a song in another language I am looking at the liner notes to see what the artist wants me to know about the track and looking for emotional hooks. On this track Bunny moves from a very emotive vocal full of soul and heartache, much like a Frank Ocean, to a more disconnected hip hop vibe like Drake. This combination may seem at odds with each other, but it really works. For me, Bunny’s vocal is endlessly listenable and has me hooked. When he needs to be more restrained he can pull it back, but when he needs to bring it on the chorus he can let it loose.
Bunny’s newest track Where She Goes is a great example of why his music is so globally popular. The track showcases his vocal range, irresistible pop appeal and ability to blend hip hop with latin pop. Bad Bunny has been crushing it in music and films for a few years now and this track shows why he is an artist who continues to reach new heights.
