The New Oldies: #10 Album of the Year 2023: Metallica – 72 Seasons

Something seems to be missing these days. It seems that record companies, radio stations, and streaming services are pushing some the great established musicians to the background. As a result these veteran artists are not getting the attention they deserve. Enter the Top 10 Album Countdown: The New Oldies. The main point is simple – to make this list you must have at least 20 years of producing established music. The album by the artist must have been released between November 1st, 2022 and October 31st, 2023.

#10 Metallica – 72 Seasons

It’s very fair to say that Metallica is one of the biggest bands in the history of the music business. Some may argue Metallica has gone away from its roots, but the band still has an amazing level of popularity. In 2023, Metallica released its 11th studio album called 72 Seasons. Prior to this it had been 7 years since a Metallica Studio album. They say all good things come to those that wait, and 72 Seasons delivers. This albums lands at Number 10 on the 2023 New Oldies Countdown.

What really stood out is Metallica seems to capture its core competencies quite well - namely trash metal. The guitar riffs combined with some great lyrics and thundering drums by Lars Ullrich. Some critics pointed to the album length of 77 minutes. This I believe is the album’s strength. The closing track Inamorata is 11 minutes long and is a fitting close

In addition to Inamorata, stand out tracks include the title track, the Grammy-nominated Lux Aeterna, Screaming Suicide and If Darkness Had a Son.

This album truly entertains and keeps one’s interest from start to finish. For cigar enthusiasts, maybe this can inspired the next Blackened cigar by Drew Estate.
