One of the things that happens after every year end and OOPS! list is that I need to catch up on new music. 2024 looks like it is going to have a huge middle of the year with releases from Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. However, this big quarter of 2024 releases kicked off with Usher’s new record Coming Home. It has been a minute for Usher. His last studio record was “A” and that was back in 2018. So, when he was announced as the Super Bowl halftime show I was very excited for a possible new record. Then singles started dropping and I became even more excited. The verdict is in…the sexy R&B king is back and I for one am here for it.
Let’s review my favourite track, and one of the first singles off the record, Good Good. Usher really excels at smooth groove sexy R&B where he can let his vocal fill the room and really show off his range. However, the key is the groove. Too much bass and we are in the club, but too slow and we might be passed out on the couch. Good Good is a happy medium with some driving bass that you cna move to, but nothing that steamrolls over Usher’s vocal. Complete with trap electro clicks and wooden block percussion, there are definitely some 90s touches in this track. However, the music of any Usher track is only the opening act for what we really came for, which are his sexy vocals and boy does he deliver.
This is a classic Usher ballad where he is singing about a love lost, while at the same time reminiscing about how great they were at sex. In this track he is still good and friends with his ex, even though they are not good and together. But hey, it’s Usher, so he still finds time to talk about how they made love and how great it was. Summer Walker and 21 Savage feature on this track and do well fitting into the vibe. However, the draw is Usher with his vocal range on full display. I found myself shaking my head and throwing my hand in the air like I was throwing it up to Jesus at a Baptist church. Usher’s vocal can be a spiritual experience and it was healing me on this track.
It is great to get a new record from Usher. “A” is a good record, but this has him back in his element and his vocal is on point. It’s hard to believe that Usher put his first record out in 1994. That feels like a lifetime ago and Usher looks like he hasn’t aged at all. His vocal still gets to your soul and he is still the sexiest man alive.
