We are sooooo close to the top 20 I can feel it! Not long now. Our Aussie music journey continues, as well as some hip hop and an artist close to Coop’s heart. There are some past top 50 members in this block, as well as some really exciting new artists. Enough of me, let’s get going.
30. Charley Crockett: $10 Cowboy
Country music has gotten a much needed shake-up from artists of colour like Beyoncé, Shaboozey and Charley Crockett. This is a very traditional country arrangement with a romantic 50s vocal; however, lyrics about identity and what makes up a “real cowboy” are cnetral to the debates around race and sexuality within the genre today.
29. G Flip: Cruel Summer
Kick ass drummer and all around Aussie rock star G Flip is back in the top 50 after capturing a top 5 spot last year. This is the highest an Aussie musician ever reached and they are back again with a Taylor Swift cover. Their live cover on radio station Triple J brings some rock kick to the pop mega hit. It is a great take on the track and blends irresistible pop with some modern Aussie rock.
28. Bennie the Butcher: Bron
Bennie the Butcher along with Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine have been changing the face of hip hop. The Butcher takes his high octane rap with some tight bass and 70s R&B backing samples to new heights with this track about success, style and grinding his way to the top. Like he said he’s “in championship form.”
27. Soccer Mommy: Abigail
Soccer Mommy has been on both past top 50 lists and OOPS! lists. Her indie sound has ranged to singer songwriter to guitar forward rock. Her latest track Abigail is a happy medium with driving percussion, Johnny Marr style guitar and shimmery background synth. However, her vocal is a throwback to the fragile and vulernable folk vocal we heard in her earlier work. This is a mesmerising pop folk track that will get you moving.
26. Health ft. Sierra: Hateful
This was a late 2023 release that qualified for the top 50 2024 list. Health has been on the list in the past for their work with Nine Inch Nails. Hateful sees the band do their own Nine Inch Nails work with some heart pumping electro industrial metal. There is both a club feel and a weight to this track that is reminiscent of 90s Ministry. Especially when the thrash goes up to 11 and people are screaming about “Lies! All lies!” I love some good old industrial metal and this really does the trick.
