New Music Reviews Top 50 and OOPS! Lists

Top 50 of 2024 / #25-21: An Aussie Duo, Chocolate and Rubies

One last block before the top 20. We are getting to the end of Aussie bands on the top 50, so enjoy it while you can. We also have two musicals in the top 50, which is a first, and one is in this bock. So sit back, relax and listen to some great music.

25. Sia and Kylie Minogue: Dance Alone

Two hugs artists in the club scene join forces to make the ultimate Aussie dance track. We have the pioneer of Aussie dance with Kylie teaming up the the new school in Sia. This is a fun and classic 4/4 dance track with hints of disco and Kylie’s early 2000s dance music. Moreover, both artists have unforgettable vocals and it is fun to hear them both go for it. So, grab someone and dance!

24. ScHoolboy Q: Yeern 101

I have not listened to ScHoolboy Q in a long time, but his new record Blue Lips caught my attention. The fairly stripped back and simple beats are in stock contrast to Q’s machine gun style flow. He is throwing bars at you so quickly you barely have time to register what is going on. This is classic hip hop where Q lets you know how successful he is and how much better he is than you. This plus his guest spot with Tyler the Creator makes this a big year for Q.

23. Nicki Minaj: Red Ruby Da Sleeze

This is release that came out in late 2023 and was just eligible to be on the top 50. Nicki Minaj has been guest starring on a number of tracks and pop style hip hop in the past few years. Nothing has really come close to her masterclass on Kanye’s Monster. This track is the closest I have heard with Nicki having fun and putting together some huge bars. Not to mention some massive bass drops, cool looping back vocals and tons of pop references.

22. GloRilla: Hollon

A big year for women in hip hop and a special year for GloRilla. She has been guesting on Tyler the Creator’s new record and putting out a record of her own. Made famous by her classic Memphis style patterned after Gangsta Boo, GloRilla is back better than ever. This track has some big Three 6 Mafia vibes with some huge bass, trap tweets and even a church bell. This is classic GloRilla being sexy, aggressive, powerful and confident.

21. Timothy Chalamet: Pure Imagination

Yet another late 2023 entry on the list, Timothy was the first track I put on the top 50 list about a year ago. The prequel movie people thought nobody needed turned out to be a musical that made hundreds of millions of dollars. Timothy flexed his vocal muscles and may have used this as a warm-up to his Bob Dylan movie. The soundtrack is full of heartwarming and well executed original tracks, but it is his rendition of Pure Imagination that hit me the hardest. No one can duplicate Gene Wilder’s version in the original movie, but has a wonder and emotionality to it that brings it altogether. A bit smaller and personal in the beginning it builds to an epic conclusion and gets to me every time I listen to it.
