New Music Reviews Top 50 and OOPS! Lists

OOPS! 50 of 2024 / #25-21: Injustice, Luv and Sexxy

We are nearing the top 20 and end of our OOPS! list of 2024. Very exciting. After the last post you will have 100 new songs to check out from 2024. You can impress your friends with all the new music you know…and there are some killers in this block. So, let’s go!

25. Julie: Catalogue

Julie is the closest modern comp to Nirvana out there. This LA based band follows that classic 90s Pixies quiet / loud / quiet punk song structure, but kicks it up to 11. Lyrics about feeling numb and disconnects against a punk thrash background of bleeding amps is the recipe I am always looking for. Catalogue is modern grunge with amazing energy.

24. Camila Cabello: I Luv It

Camila Cabello’s track is frantic pop vocals layered over dreamy trip hop like an elaborate cake made of lush vanilla sponge covered in thousands of Pixie Sticks. Cabello’s high pitched tweaked vocal follows the ultra popular PinkPantheress and is in stark contrast to the thick electro texture enveloping the track. This is modern pop distilled so purely it should be considered a controlled substance.

23. Mdou Moctar: Takoba (Injustice Version)

Mdou is a Niger based artist who creates social and political songs with a band of fellow performers. Mdou specialises in Tuareg guitar music and his acoustic guitar work on this track is impeccable. Combined with drums and call and response based verses, you feel like you are on a journey through the desert with a band of nomadic wanderers. Mdou has said that this is one of his most politically sharp records and the music touches your soul.

22. Sexxy Red: Get it Sexxy

Gangsta Boo came to us through her work with Three 6 Mafia out of Memphis and revolutionised women in hip hop. Her sharp flow and aggressive bars have been adopted by artists like GloRilla, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and Sexxy Red. Sexxy has that southern trap beat with a Gangsta Boo inspired flow…and bars that will make you blush in company. The power, sexiness, agency and confidence radiating off this track is intoxicating.

21. Four Tet: Loved

This is like EDM meets a classical music concerto. There are the driving electro beats you expect to serve as a spine for s club EDM track, but over that is some syth work the verges and swerves around the track. At times you think you are listening to a beautiful Mozart piece, while at other times you have verged into Tom Waits noise music territory. This track always has you guessing an interested in where it’s going. This is a very cerebral track with some excellent musicality.
