This has been a good year for a reggae team up. First, we had the amazing track Cane Fields featuring Wayne Marshall, Jesse Royal and Kabaka Pyramid. Now, we have Bugle teaming up with icons Damian Marley and Buju Banton on Thank You Lord. 2025 is shaping up to be a big year for reggae with Koffee also on her way to releasing a single…which will be on this site ASAP. But back to Bugle, I love a good team up, so let’s see if this lives up to the hype behind the names on the track.
Musically, this track hits all those traditional reggae skank notes. It is kind of a mix between some classic dancehall and Lee Scratch Perry dub, which really works. There is some trippy dub inspired reverb on the percussion with a heavy Super Ape vibe. This all gives the track a great flow and positive energy. You feel like you are drifting along with the track and letting it wash away all the negative energy. With all these traditional notes you may think that the track might seem dated, but there are some modern vocal flourishes that keeps the track fresh.
What flourishes you ask? Much like Burna Boy, Bugle uses some post-production auto-tune/vocal effects to give the track a modern hip hop / Travis Scott feel. This keeps the track fresh and modern. For me, the standouts are the two guest artists. Buju and Damian Marley really bring it with some emotionally resonant vocals and perfect timing. On some team up tracks the bigger names are lacking and are really mailing it in, but Buju and Damian work well against each other on this track. The positive energy radiating off of lyrics about why we should be thankful to God for the many blessings in the natural world is soothing. This is a track that will warm your soul.
This is a classic case of a team up track living up to the old saying “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” The artists involved on this track created something bigger than themselves. Bugle has created an excellent example of a team up track at its best and adds to 2025 being the year of reggae.
