Since Rihanna’s amazing ASL performer Justina Miles did such an inspiring ASL performance of that halftime show, I always check out the ASL performance. It gives you a fresh view of the music through the signer’s performance. Now, Justina is top tier and I watch her performance at least once a month for inspiration. You can check it out here and prepare to be inspired and sob. Seeing the performer’s emotion and how they get into the music is inspiring and amazing.
Celimar Rivera Cosme is making history as the first person to sign in the Puerto Rican version of ASL. I learned that signing in Puerto Rican is different than ASL, because it includes slang unique to Puerto Rico and Bad Bunny’s music. In fact, Celimar wrote to Bad Bunny about how she could sign for him and he brought her on tour. Similarly, Justina Miles got her gig through posting videos of her signing to Rihanna tracks…so the lesson is to make it happen. Write your letters and post your videos people…you never know. She was joined by Julian Ortiz who identifies as Afro-Latino and similarly uses Puerto Rican specific signing. So, what was their performance like?
Here is the video for you to check out. Importantly, you can see the Bad Bunny performance in a corner screen, so you can match everything up, which is great. First of all, these are the two coolest looking people on Earth. Celimar has a flower in her hair, while Julian jumps in and out all tatted up and ready to go. Both performers really embody the joy, energy and sex appeal from the show in their performance. The energy and joy in their expressions really adds to the performance and transports you into the show. While watching them you really feel part of the show and part of the party.
Much like Justina, the most inspirational part of the show is the idea that their passion for Bad Bunny and pride in Puerto Rico is giving millions of people an opportunity to be part of a show they might have missed out on. Celimar and Julian have amazing chemistry and the emotion and energy pulsating from the screen is palpable. An incredible performance that added a new look to the halftime show and really showed the pride, joy and emotion behind the show.
I highly recommend that everyone checks out the performance. Now, they were using Peurto Rican signing to translate Spanish….so I had no idea what they were saying, but the performance itself spoke volumes. Well performed ALS and Puerto Rican sign performances is the essence of music. You essentially strip everything back to emotion, performance and how music inspires people. Much like Justina, Celimar and Julian are performing for the love of the music and the desire to share that love with others, so they too can experience the music. Such performances are very generous and are borne out of love. Much like Bad Bunny, the signing performance is one of unity and togetherness.
