We are now in the top 10, so you know it’s serious. This is the first block where I didn’t know anything about these bands until I did the OOPS! list. There are some interesting gems in this list, so let’s get going…
10. Greet Death: Country Girl
The best way to describe Greet Death is noir indie folk…but even that seems to be too reductive. They have classic modern indie folk vibes mixed with crunch guitar and a prevailing sense of dread. It’s sort of like if Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska record made an indie band. I love it. Some interesting folk rock with an edge.
9. Marie Davidson: Demolition
Are you missing 90s industrial EDM? Well, Marie is here to help you out. The Nine Inch Nails and KMFDM vibes coming off this track are intense…but I love it. It’s this nihilistic hard edged synth fuelled decent into the abyss. That might sound like a tough time for some, but myself and others hear that and it’s like ringing the dinner bell. This is some honest industrial bliss and I love it.
8. Kelela: Better (Unplugged)
Kelela is an artist I looked into a few years ago and just fell away. Well, she’s back with some really powerful and emotional R&B. Kind of a cross between Sade and India Arie, Kelela can be both sexy and emotionally vulnerable. Her vocal, especially in this unplugged format, has a power lacking in most R&B.
7. Momma: I Want You (Fever)
This is some raw guitar driven indie rock with some glittering harmonies at its core. Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten are the two front women whose harmonies really elevate the track and give it a great hook. Moreover, the guitar work is crunchy and searing, which gives the track a real drive. The combination of crunch and glitter is one of contrasts, but it plays really well in the track and in the band overall.
8. Open Mike Eagle: My co-worker clark kent’s secret black box
Open Mike Eagle is spitting bars we all think when we watched superman…How can no one know??? I mean…all he has on different is a hat and glasses! Open Mike has amazing wordplay in this super fun song where it is a pleasure to listen to Open Mike craft the song. Moreover, it is backed by some lush beats and backing music that is a joy to listen to. Don’t pass this track up.
