The title of this post is a series of words you never thought you would see in one place. That is part of this track’s beauty…just the fact that I can write that title. Aussie psychedelic 70s throwback band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (KGLW) teams up with another Aussie band, which can only be described as acid punk performance art, Tropical Fuck Storm (TFS). What you get when you mix these bands together is the trippy electronic journey entitled Satanic Slumber Party Pt. 2. This track is part punk, part indie weirdness, part 70s fuzz guitar trip and all camp. Much like The Cramps and The Misfits, TFS and KGLW take the drama and camp performance up to 11 to create a trippy grindhouse track one needs to experience.
Lyrically, the track embraces the campy shlock of a late 70s / early 80s slasher flick. TFS vocalist Gareth Liddiard embraces all the campy tropes one would associate with a track called Satanic Slumber Party. This is a collaboration that does not take itself seriously and is all about the ride. His edgy / aggressive vocal resembles a young Nick Cave in his The Birthday Party days. Gareth’s raw drone fits a 70s metal track about a satanic slumber party.
Where this track really starts bending reality is in its musical composition. There is a weird combination of synth, 70s psychedelic fuzz guitar, percussion and noises I can’t even place. A cross between an acid trip and an 8 bit video game, Satanic Slumber Party really moves. Sometimes you don’t know where you are going, but much like skidding on a street of ice…just hang on and hope for the best.
It is such a weird and beautiful song, which is why it is so great. Sometimes music needs to be weird and challenge you. There is a structure to the track, but the acid dipped tangents the track goes on makes it both confusing and exhilarating. No matter how many times you listen to the track you are never 100% sure where you are headed. It’s best to sit back and enjoy the ride. Like Gareth says, “Pack your toothbrush and your Ouija board.”
