N.W.A. helped Hip Hop have one last stance in the 80s Madness Tournament. Straight Outta Compton, the 1988 debut album by N.W.A. had little problem eliminating George Michael’s Faith on Dave’s bracket. Meanwhile Bruce Springsteen and his Born in the U.S.A. album fended off a challenge from INXS’ Kick on Coop’s bracket.. Both N.W.A. and Springsteen move on to the Sweet 16.
On Dave’s bracket, N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton won comfortably 64.2% to 35.8% over Michael’s Faith – pretty much building its lead early and never looking back.
On Coop’s bracket, while Springsteen won 54.5% to 45.5% over INXS’ Kick, this was a much closer matchup. Late on the second day, INXS pulled within one vote of Springsteen. In the end, Springsteen got a small surge to hold on for the win.
Both of the wins set up 2-3 matchups in the Sweet Sixteen for Dave and Coop. On Dave’s bracket, 2nd seeded N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton faces 3rd seeded Van Halen’s 1984. Meanwhile on Coop’s bracket, 2nd seed Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. faces 3rd seeded Peter Gabriel’s So.
