G Flips’ The Worst Person Alive: Some Good Honest Aussie Pop Punk

G Flip has been putting out catchy punky indie pop music since their singles came out in 2018. Listeners to the podcast would have heard be talk about Killing My Time when it was released and said to be on the lookout for G Flip…well…we’re here. They now have their second record Drummer out and it is taking over Australia. I think the track The Worst Person Alive has the best chance to make the jump over the pond, so let’s check it out.

Much like Olivia Rodrigo, Soccer Mommy, Billie Eilish and fellow Aussie Courtney Barnett, G Flip is this catchy balance between indie pop and punk. Musically there are little pop glimmers in the acoustic guitar, jumping bass lines and light percussion during the verses. However, the bridge and chorus brings in more crunchy guitar and aggressive Joy Division – esque snapping drums, which puts you back in late 80s punk. There is just enough of each genre to both round out the punk edges, but sharpen up the pop bubble gum. The track itself is extremely catchy, but the punk accents gives it enough depth to have it hit each time. Multiple listens fill your soul as opposed to being empty calories….It’s like chicken soup with Tabasco instead of a bowl full of cotton candy.

G Flip follows familiar indie pop punk ground with a track about a love gone wrong. In this case, they are on the receiving end of hate as opposed to hating the other…like the opposite of Rodrigo’s Vampire. G Flip is the one who has gone from lover to the target of hate and loathing. This track shows how quickly things can change when love falls apart and people need something to project their anger and grief towards. In fact, G Flip reminds me a lot of Olivia Rodrigo in that they both ahve a bit of punk in them, sing about similar themes and their vocals come across as honest. You get the feeling that G Flip is going through something and you are here for them. You feel for G Flip and connect with them in a way that doesn’t happen with most pop tracks.

I love honest and genuine vocals. Sometimes I listen to music for some uncut BLACK PINK fun with no strings attached, but I live for artists who can connect with me on an emotional level. I feel and see the world differently after listening to their music. For me, G Flip is one of those artists and I hope they get a chance to bring their wonderful music over to America.
