Brandy’s Christmas Party for Two: Everyone Deserves a Sexy Christmas

Brandy took the world by storm with her singing career, staring in Moesha and playing Cinderella in 1997. Her music continued to come out until about 2012 when Two Eleven came out. After that there was no studio work for about 8 years until she released B7 in 2020. This is a solid record with a few guest artists and some really sexy grooves and classic R&B tracks. I was happy to see Brandy back making music and now I am even happier to know I will not have to wait 8 years for another record. You see, Brandy is back in the Christmas music business with Christmas With Brandy. Ok, it is not the most original title, but this is a Christmas record that is both naughty and nice…..see what I did there.

Brandy’s Christmas With Brandy record strikes a good balance between Christmas classics like Jingle Bells, but also great original tracks like Christmas Party For Two. The track itself is your classic Sade – esque R&B vibes with deep bass, some snare snaps here and there, and slow acoustic guitar. If you are thinking that sounds like a sparse arrangement, you’re right. There is not a ton of musicality going on, which leaves a ton of room for Brandy’s vocal. This arrangement is within R&B’s tradition of giving you enough to have a sexy groove, but also leaving an airplane hanger open for the vocal.

Let’s be honest. We are not listening to Brandy for complex wall of sound arrangements…we want to hear that vocal…and she does not disappoint. Where the music sparse and restrained, Brandy’s vocal is warm and fills the space very well. Her range is sill there and she accentuates her verses with some vocal acrobatics that are a joy to listen to. Her vocal is often accented with some production multi-tracking, which creates a fun headphone experience. The track itself is about getting sexy with your lover under the mistletoe. That’s about it, but what else do you need? A great sexy R&B song about Christmas is just what everyone needs.

After listening to this track I realised two things. One, I did not realise how much I missed Brandy’s music and two, the Christmas music milieu is seriously in need of more sexy songs. The sudden appearance of two records in three years is a far cry from the eight year hiatus after 2012. Her vocal is still solid and a joy to listen to, so I hope this record will lead to more studio releases from her. This is a must play Christmas song…because sometimes on Christmas….being naughty is nice.
