Moms ROCK! – Mothers in Music

Mother’s Day is upon us and it’s time to celebrate women carers in music. This is for all the women caring for children out there…moms…adopted moms…foster moms…aunties…grandmas…all carers who identify as women. There are a ton of women caring for children in music who deserve a wonderful Mother’s Day. So, let’s get into it.

Dolly Parton: My Tennessee Mountain Home

Even though Dolly has never had biological children herself, she has often talked about caring for her younger siblings and caring for her siblings children. As one of 12 children, Dolly often had to care for younger children. Moreover, she calls herself an auntie to her siblings kids and sayd how much she loves caring for them. So, shout out to Dolly and all the other aunties, older siblings and grandmas caring for kids out there.

Sia: Titanium

Sia has a child with her husband and also has adopted two teenagers before they left the care of child protection. Sia shows the importance of foster parents and adopted parents in the child protection system. Without their love and care, children can get lost in the system and miss out on the support parents give us throughout our lives. Sia and other foster parents deserve a shout out for all their hard work helping children heal from traumatic histories. Have a great Mother’s Day SIA!

Beyoncé ft. Blue Ivy: Brown Skin Girl

In a throwback to country music family bands, Beyoncé has performed with her daughter Blue Ivy. There are a number of partners who are in a band together and siblings who have been in a band together; however, there are not many examples of mothers and daughters. Even though Blue Ivy was quite young when on the track Brown Skin Girl, she is no stranger to the limelight and I see a number of mother/daughter musical projects in the future. Have a great Mother’s Day Beyoncé and clean your room Blue Ivy.

The Judds: Why Not Me

You can’t talk about mother/daughter groups without talking about the most famous example, the Judds. Wynonna and her mother Naomi made countless records and were country music powerhouses in the 80s. Unfortunately, the family itself faced numerous troubles including depression, addiction, abuse, family estrangement and ultimately Naomi’s suicide a day before the group went into the country music hall of fame. Sometimes mothers and families do the best they can with what they have at the time…and through all their troubles Wynonna and Naomi were able to stick together and make incredible music. On Mother’s Day we need to recognise mothers who are struggling and give them support. Unfortunately, Naomi was not able to find the support she was looking for, but she was able to be the best mother she could in the face of countless struggles.

Alanis Morissette: Ablaze

Alanis wrote this track as a dedication to her kids on her comeback record Such Pretty Forks in the Road. She has had a career resurgence with a critically acclaimed and commercially successful record in Pretty Forks, as well as guesting on a number of big tracks in 2025 and 2026. Most importantly, Alanis has talked about the challenges of being a mother, postpartum depression and how motherhood inspires her creativity. She gives voice to millions of mothers who experience postpartum depression, but feel too ashamed to reach out for help. Her story of struggle and hope will help countless mothers get support. Shout out to Alanis on this Mother’s Day for her bravery to tell her story…and a shout out to all the mothers out there doing it tough…there is light at the end of the tunnel and I hope you get the support you need.

Aretha Franklin: Respect

The mother of soul was also….a mother. She became a mother at the age of 12 and then had another child at the age of 14. As a young mother, Franklin looked towards her grandmother and sister to help her raise her children and pursue music. In the 50s and 60s…and even today…young mothers are stigmatised and face an uphill battle. Aretha was blessed with a supportive family that gave her the support she needed to care for her children and keep her family together. There are millions of young mothers out there who are doing it tough on Mother’s Day and let’s hope you have the support to make it through. Shout out to all of you young mothers for making it happen and overcoming huge challenges. Have a great Mother’s Day.
